Whit Holder presents seminar on the scribe method of timber framing
Oct 26, 2007
Whit Holder recently presented a two-part seminar instructing and demonstrating the scribe method of timber framing at the Timber Framers Guild Eastern Conference in Montebello, Quebec. Nearly one hundred people, including professional timber framers, architects, engineers, and other interested persons attended the 90 minute presentation and a 90 minute follow-up demonstration.
Scribing is a historical method of building timber frames that was developed hundreds of years ago, and is still used today in timber frame preservation and timber frame reproduction. Scribing is also often used when working with reclaimed timbers and when building European style timber frames.
Holder Bros. often uses the scribe method to build timber frames at their facility in Monroe, Georgia. In 2006, Holder Bros. built a historic reproduction timber frame English cottage using the scribe technique. Later that year, Holder Bros. went on to build a historic reproduction of a seventeenth century timber frame in Charleston, South Carolina using the scribe method. In October 2007 Holder Bros. used reclaimed antique heart pine timbers to build four timber frame trusses for a new residence in Morgan County, Georgia using the scribe method.
Whit previously presented this seminar at the American College of the Building Arts in Charleston, South Carolina to students in the timber frame program.
