Holder Brothers asked to demonstrate hewing in England
Aug 28, 2008
Whit and Gabel Holder will be traveling to Essex, England this month to demonstrate traditional timber framing techniques to an international group of carpenters. The brothers, who have been asked to demonstrate American axe work, will use felling axes and broad axes to hew a log into a timber at the annual gathering of the United Kingdom’s Carpenter’s Fellowship. The Carpenter’s Fellowship, which includes members worldwide, is an organization of timber framers which “promotes communication, training and sharing of knowledge amongst those interested in historic and contemporary timber framed structures.” (from www.carpentersfellowship.co.uk) The event, referred to as “Frame 2008” will take place on September 19-21st at Cressing Temple, an ancient site which is home to two tithe barns built by the Knights Templar in the 13th century, one of which is recognized as the oldest timber framed barn in the world.
